    SAR

A Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) is the disclosure UK regulated firms must file with the National Crime Agency when they know or suspect (or have reasonable grounds to know or suspect) that a person is engaged in money laundering or terrorist financing.

SARs are filed online via the NCA's SAR Online portal, must be filed promptly after the suspicion arises, and trigger a consent regime — for some activities the regulated firm must wait for NCA consent before proceeding. The filer must not "tip off" the subject — telling the client a report has been made is a separate criminal offence. The MLRO is responsible for deciding whether to escalate internal concerns into a SAR.
