    Sanctions List

    Glossary

    Sanctions List

A sanctions list is an official register of individuals, companies, and jurisdictions that UK businesses are legally prohibited from dealing with — most commonly the OFSI Consolidated List in the UK, plus equivalents from the UN, EU, and US OFAC.

Sanctions screening is a strict-liability obligation — ignorance of a match is not a defence. UK firms must screen new customers, beneficial owners, and counterparties at onboarding and on an ongoing basis as lists are updated (typically weekly). Hits must be reported to OFSI within set deadlines and assets frozen pending guidance. Most regulated firms use automated screening tools that check multiple lists simultaneously.
