    Glossary

    PEP

A Politically Exposed Person (PEP) is someone who holds, or has held within the last 12 months, a prominent public function — heads of state, senior politicians, senior military or judicial officers, central bank officials, or senior executives of state-owned enterprises — plus their family members and close associates.

PEP status by itself doesn't prohibit a business relationship — it triggers Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD). UK regulated firms must take additional measures including: senior management approval before onboarding, source of wealth and source of funds verification, and enhanced ongoing monitoring. PEPs cease to be PEPs 12 months after leaving the relevant role, but the EDD must continue until risk is fully assessed.
