    Glossary

    KYC

Know Your Customer (KYC) is the practice of verifying a client's identity, ownership structure, and source of funds before and during a business relationship.

KYC is the practical layer underneath AML — it's how you do customer due diligence in day-to-day operations. For UK regulated firms, KYC typically means collecting identity documents (passport / driving licence) and proof of address, confirming beneficial ownership for corporate clients, and screening against sanctions and politically exposed person (PEP) lists. The depth of KYC required varies with the client's risk profile — low risk gets simplified due diligence, high risk gets enhanced due diligence.
