    Self Assessment

    Glossary

    Self Assessment

Self Assessment is the UK system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax from people whose tax can't be automatically deducted from wages, pensions, or savings — typically the self-employed, company directors, landlords, and high earners.

You register for Self Assessment by 5 October following the tax year in which you first need to file. The online return is due by 31 January following the end of the tax year (so for the 2025/26 tax year ending 5 April 2026, the return is due by 31 January 2027). Most directors of UK limited companies are also required to file even if all income is processed through payroll, although there are exceptions.
