    Utr

    Glossary

    UTR

A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is the 10-digit number HMRC issues to every individual and company registered for Self Assessment or Corporation Tax.

You receive a UTR by post (and to your online HMRC account) within a few weeks of registering. It identifies you on every tax return, payment, and correspondence with HMRC. Companies have a UTR; their directors have separate personal UTRs. Losing your UTR is annoying but recoverable — HMRC will reissue it after identity verification.
