    PAYE

    Pay As You Earn (PAYE) is the UK system through which employers deduct Income Tax and National Insurance from employees' wages and pay it to HMRC on the employee's behalf.

    Every UK employer running a payroll must operate PAYE, even one-person companies paying a single director. Tax codes (e.g. 1257L) determine how much tax-free pay each employee gets each year. Information is reported in real time to HMRC under the RTI (Real Time Information) framework — typically on or before each payday.
