Right To Rent
Glossary
Right to Rent
Right to Rent is the UK legal duty on private landlords in England to check that all adult occupiers have the right to be in the UK before letting them a residential property — a similar concept to the right-to-work check but for tenancies.
Acceptable checks are: an online check using the prospective tenant's share code (for non-British and non-Irish nationals), a manual document check (for British and Irish nationals using passport / driving licence + proof of address), or an Identity Service Provider check using IDVT. A correctly performed check gives the landlord a statutory excuse against a civil penalty (up to £20,000 per illegal occupier on a subsequent breach). Letting agents normally do the check on behalf of the landlord.
