    Right To Work Check

    Glossary

    Right to Work Check

A right to work check is the UK employer's legal duty to confirm that every new hire has the right to do the work they're being employed for, before their first day of work.

Acceptable checks are: an online check using the worker's share code (for most non-British and non-Irish nationals), a manual document check (for British and Irish nationals), or an Identity Service Provider check using IDVT software (for British and Irish nationals with a valid passport). A correctly performed check gives the employer a statutory excuse against a civil penalty (up to £60,000 per illegal worker) if the worker is later found not to have permission.
