MTD
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme to require businesses and individuals to keep digital tax records and submit returns through compatible software, rather than on paper or via the HMRC portal directly.
MTD for VAT has been mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses since April 2022. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) is being phased in: from April 2026 for self-employed individuals and landlords with annual income over £50,000, and from April 2027 for those with income over £30,000. Under MTD ITSA, affected taxpayers must submit quarterly updates through MTD-compatible software, plus a year-end finalisation, replacing the single annual Self Assessment return.
