Going Rate
Glossary
Going Rate
The "going rate" is the Home Office's published median salary for a specific SOC code, used as the minimum salary a UK sponsor must pay a Skilled Worker visa holder in that role — or the general Skilled Worker threshold, whichever is higher.
Going rates are set out in Appendix Skilled Occupations to the Immigration Rules and updated periodically. For roles paid less than 100% of the going rate, the visa is refused (with limited tradeable points exceptions for new entrants, PhD relevance, and shortage occupations). From April 2024 the general Skilled Worker salary threshold rose to £38,700, with the going rates revised upward in line — making Skilled Worker visas significantly more expensive for employers in lower-paying sectors.
