    Glossary

    DPO

A Data Protection Officer (DPO) is the named individual responsible for overseeing an organisation's data protection strategy and ensuring GDPR compliance, mandatory for some organisations and recommended as best practice for many others.

A DPO is required under UK GDPR if the organisation is a public authority, carries out large-scale systematic monitoring, or processes special category data on a large scale. Outside those triggers, appointing a DPO is voluntary but increasingly common — many SMEs use an outsourced DPO-as-a-service rather than a full-time hire. The DPO must report to the highest level of management and operate independently of operational decisions.
