    Self Assessment tax return checklist

A simple checklist covering every document, figure, and decision you'll need before sitting down to complete a UK Self Assessment tax return.

Who it’s for: Self-employed individuals, company directors, and landlords filing their own UK Self Assessment

    How to use

    Follow these steps

    1. Gather identity + income documents

UTR, National Insurance number, P60 / P45 from any employment, dividend vouchers, bank interest statements, any P11D received.

    2. Pull together self-employment numbers

Turnover, allowable expenses (split by category), opening/closing stock, capital allowances on equipment bought during the year.

    3. Pull together property income numbers

Rent received, allowable expenses (repairs, agent fees, insurance, finance costs subject to restriction), capital improvements separated out.

    4. Check personal allowances and reliefs

Pension contributions, Gift Aid donations, marriage allowance, blind person''s allowance, and any other reliefs that apply.

    5. Review prior-year return

Pick up any losses brought forward, any payments on account already made, any underpaid tax being collected via PAYE coding.

    6. File before 31 January

Online filing deadline is 31 January following the tax year end. Pay any tax due by the same date. Late filing penalty is £100 even if no tax is owed.
