    SaaS pricing canvas

A one-page canvas to design or revisit your SaaS pricing — covering value metric, packaging, price points, expansion, and the testing plan.

Who it’s for: SaaS founders, product leads, and revenue leads

    How to use

    Follow these steps

    1. Identify the value metric

What grows with customer value? Seats, transactions, contacts, GB stored, API calls. The metric must scale with customer success.

    2. Design 3 packages

Starter / Growth / Enterprise (or similar). Each package has a target segment, a clear unlock vs the previous tier, and a price anchored against the value delivered.

    3. Set price points

Triangulate: cost-plus floor, competitor benchmark, value-based ceiling. Land somewhere in between. Round to memorable numbers ($49, $199, $499 — not $217).

    4. Design the expansion path

How customers naturally grow in spend: more seats, more usage, upgrading to a higher tier, add-ons. Plot the typical 12-month expansion.

    5. Add price levers

Annual prepay discount (10-15%), volume discount tiers, multi-year commitment discount, charity / non-profit rate. Each lever needs a reason — random discounting devalues the product.

    6. Plan the test

How will you validate pricing before rolling out broadly — paid landing page test, sales conversation A/B, cohort comparison? Pricing changes are reversible but bad signals can stick.

    7. Plan the rollout

Grandfathering existing customers (typically yes, for 12 months), notice period for new prices, communication plan, and the date the new pricing goes live.
